President Klaus Iohannis on Sunday evening sent congratulations to women's handball team CSM Bucharest, the winner of the Champions League competition, and tennis players Simona Halep and Horia Tecau on their wins in the Mutua Open Madrid tournament.
"This weekend, Romania achieved three big athletic wins. Congratulations to the female handball players of CSM Bucharest, who, competing for the first time in the Champions League, won it this evening! My congratulations to Simona Halep, who yesterday won her 12th trophy as she won the [women's singles] final in Madrid! My congratulations also go to Horia Tecau, who, also in Madrid, won the men's doubles final! May your good luck continue!" Iohannis wrote in a post on his Facebook page.
CSM Bucharest won the women's handball Champions League competition after defeating Hungary's Gyor ETO, 29-26 (13-12, 22-22), in a penalty shootout in the final at the Papp Laszlo Arena of Budapest. Romania's champion sprang a big surprise by its win at the end of a dramatic match. This was CSM Bucharest's first participation in the Champions League.
Simona Halep, world's number seven, won the women's singles event at the 4,771,360-dollar Mutua Open Madrid tournament after defeating Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia), 6-2, 6-4. N.6 Halep won in one hour and 20 minutes, adding her first title to her tally this year. Halep was a 2014 Madrid finalist, but she lost to Russian Maria Sharapova in three sets.
Horia Tecau (ROU) /Jean-Julien Rojer (NED) on Sunday won the men's doubles event of the 4,771,360-dollar Madrid Open, part of the ATP World Tour Masters 1,000, after defeating Romanian-Indian double Florin Mergea/Rohan Bopanna, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
