Only one in five Dutch agree with the free movement of all citizens in the European Union, according to a study conducted by TNS Nipo for the University of Amsterdam, Agerpres informs.

Thus, while 54% of the respondents believe that EU citizens should work anywhere in the Community, the percentage drops to 18% when it comes to Romanian and Bulgarian citizens.

Even pro-European parties registered a dramatic decrease in the percentage of those who agree with the opening of EU borders to all EU citizens.

I've never seen an effect so powerful by adding four to five words to a question,'' political communication Professor Claes said.

Before dismantling the system of work permits for people from Romania and Bulgaria, there were fears that thousands of people will come to the Netherlands to find a job.

But statistics do not back this theory. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, until mid-March, less than 1,000 Romanian and Bulgarians came to the Netherlands.
