The Romanian ambassador to Armenia has been urgently called back after causing a diplomatic scandal with a series of statements made during a lecture delivery.
Sorin Vasile was invited to deliver a lecture at the American University of Armenia and he was asked what was more important for Romania, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide or the economic relations with Turkey.
According to civilnet.am, Sorin Vasile’s answer stunned the attendees.
The Ambassador compared the events of the early 20th century, when nearly 2 million Armenians were killed with homosexual relations, saying it was a matter of "perspective". Moreover, the ambassador also told some anti-Semitic jokes.
In the end, Sorin Vasile gave the example of the Franco-German relations, which returned to normal after the events of the last century. These claims were considered insulting by the Armenians present, who compared the speech of the Romanian ambassador to that of Turkish officials, who said that the problem "will disappear in time."
His comments and comparisons were deemed completely inappropriate and have completely outraged the Jewish communities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Ambassador has been urgently called back to account for the incident.
