President Traian Basescu and Pope Francis shook hands and had a brief dialogue on Tuesday, at  the Vatican,  after the enthronement service of  the new sovereign pontiff.
   
Traian Băsescu attended Tuesday the inauguration ceremony of the pontificate of Pope Francis.

President Traian Basescu sent to His Sanctity a  message of congratulations on behalf of the  Roman Catholics, Greek Catholics and Orthodox Christians in Romania, wishing him success in the  mission entrusted to him. His Sanctity, Pope Francis told the President to pray for him and for the success of his  pontificate, " Bogdan Oprea, spokesman for the president  specified for Mediafax.


Pope Francis thanked President Basescu for attending  the inauguration ceremony  of his pontificate at the Vatican, the spokesman stated.
