According to the Prime Minister the horizon to finalize that process would be around 2020.
"The year 2015 is no longer a reliable target, we must be realistic, 2015 is out of the question. I think that not even Poland, which has convergence criteria more advanced than Romania, no longer intends to join the Eurozone in 2015. I believe we should not give up the goal, but the horizon is somewhere by 2020 " Ponta stated, according to Mediafax.
President Traian Băsescu stated Friday in Brussels that Romanian aimed for “ a reasonable term to join the Euro zone” because the EU states that adopted the common currency were not willing to wait too long and they would continue the integration process in that direction.
He pointed out that the official deadline assumed by Romania to adopt the euro in 2015 was no longer a “realistic” one and re-asserted that the Government, the Parliament and the National Bank were the institutions responsible to analyze the new accession objective.
The president believes that it is essential for Romania to join the Euro zone over the next three to four years.
