Romania's accession to the euro zone should not be a measure imposed, but must lead to a change in people's minds who should understand that this process involves not only advantages but also some disadvantages, Prime Minister Victor Ponta stated.
"First, it is a change in people's minds, because there must not be an imposed measure. People need to understand what the changeover means, what are the advantages and disadvantages, because there aren’t only advantages, there are also disadvantages," Ponta said, according to Mediafax.
He also pointed out that the adoption of a set of laws and restrictions regarding deficit, inflation and monetary policy is necessary.
President Klaus Iohannis will hold consultations with the political parties to reach a national political consensus regarding Romania’s accession to the Eurozone, announced Thursday the Presidential Administration after the meeting held by the president and Prime Minister Victor Ponta and the National Bank governor, Mugur Isărescu.
"Such a consensus will allow the adoption of a national strategy for the transition to the euro and a rigorous calendar of economic, monetary, legal and institutional reforms to ensure for Romania an economic stable and predictable path ", the release reads.
The press release states that the officials have decided also "the establishment of a steering committee for the adoption of the common currency process to ensure the design, coordination and monitoring stages and responsibilities involved in achieving this objective".
Also, discussions have considered "to identify the main stages and economic and institutional responsibilities of the conversion process, in tune with the commitments assumed by the Government within the 2015-2018 Convergence Program".
