Romania exported food products totaling EUR 360.8 million in January 2014, up by  nearly 44% (about 109.3 million euros), compared to the same period of 2013, the 'stars' of  the beginning of the year  exports were corn, wheat and tobacco, according to Agerpres.

In the first month of the year, the value of intra-Community supplies increased by 45.7% over the same period in 2013 to 229.2 million euros and the third countries totaled 131.6 million euros, registering a plus 39.7%.

According to MARD, the bulk of export revenues in January 2014 was generated by the 291,000 tons of maize, which brought 86.8 million euros, respectively a 76% extra over the same period 2013 and the total amount exported was 24.1%. Also, exports of wheat, about 294 300 tonnes have grossed 60.6 million, an increase of 152% compared to January 2013, representing 16.8% of the total obtained from exports.


The exports of  cigarillos and cigarettes, about 2,400 tons, contributed  with 39.3 million (10.9% of total export value), the sunflower seeds - 99 400 tons - have added  another 35.6 million, 9.9% of the total, and the proceeds of the 25,100 tons of sunflower oil that went to foreign markets was 17.2 million, representing 4.8% of  the total revenue from exports in January 2014.

Increased exports of nuts at a higher price compared to the reference, drew an additional revenue of 3.1 million euros.

On the other hand, the  decreased external supplies of live cattle (3,000 tons) and poultry (4,800 tons) affected negatively the volume of revenue from these product groups, with 30.7% and 14.7% respectively, with less than 3.5 million, respectively, with 1.7 million compared to the first month of 2013.


According to MARD Secretary of State Daniel Botănoiu, Romania has a chance in 2014 to become a major player in the Black Sea cereal market, under the circumstances where Ukraine on account of its conflict to with Russia, has not grown large areas in 2014.

Regarding the imports of agricultural products, they marked a decline of 3.3% in January 2014, following the decrease in food products from third countries, totaling 325.3 million euros. In the first month of the year, imports increased by 9.6%, compared to the same period in 2013 to 276.9 million euros, but decreased by 20.6% in third countries, which totaled 48.4 million.


Pork continues to occupy first place in imports by  9,300 tons in January 2014. Even if the quantitative imports were lower by 600 tons compared to the same month in 2013, the highest price recorded in at the beginning of the year determined higher costs,  2.1 million to a total of 17.4 million.

Romania has spent in January 2014 an amount of EUR 13.7 million for imports of citrus (33,700 tons), 12.1 million for animal feedstuffs (20,500 tons), raw tobacco - 11.7 million (2,800 tons) and food preparations (11.6 million) for 3,200 tons.

The European Union was the main partner in Romania's agricultural trade. Thus, in January 2014, the supply of agricultural products to these destinations had a value share of 63.5%, and purchases from EU member states held a share of 85.1%.
