National Bank Governor Mugur Isarescu appeals to wisdom and reason on the situation in Greece and urges banks depositors not to act emotionally because they will lose time and interest on deposits to which an early withdrawal fee is added.
"In case of emotional moments, more or less justified, banks can provide liquidities sourcing from NBR and the only losers are bank depositors: time, interest and withdrawal fees," said Isarescu, according to Agerpres.
Mugur Isarescu again assured that the Greek-owned banks in Romania are safe, well capitalized and subject to NBR regulations, not decisions from Athens but in case of panic, the National Bank is prepared to intervene with all the tools it has at hand.
NBR chief presented a picture of the Romanian banks with Greek capital, emphasizing that they are not dependent on parent banks in Greece.
