President Traian Basescu argued Thursday that the attitude of the Romanian party towards Lukoil should be "understandable to the Russians". The head of state warned that the company must decide: either the company complies with the Romanian state laws and remains here, or, "if it  wants  the laws of  Moscow, then  it should go there." "Our behavior must be understood by the Russians. We will have to behave the same. The Russians cannot say:" We are closing the refinery because we want to. "Lukoil should consider to leave the Romanian market if that's the approach. They also have an entire distribution chain",  Basescu said.

The President said that Romania is a  rule of law state  and that the law applies to all equally. Basescu added that the pressuring seemed to him like “a Putin’s  approach," adding that "this is what Putin does in his country not in  an EU country."

"Lukoil should make up their minds: if they want to stay, they comply with the Romanian state laws. If they want the laws from Moscow, they go there ", Băsescu added.
