A premiere in the Romanian medical world. A fetus was operated intrauterine for a rare anomaly that would have caused her the amputation of the hand. The intervention was performed in the 26th week of pregnancy at Regina Maria Hospital by Dr. Hadi Rahimian, specialist in fetal surgery.
Anastasia is the first baby in Romania to be operated on for a rare congenital anomaly even before being delivered. The anomaly would have led to the amputation of her arm after birth. The amniotic band is a congenital anomaly that occurs when the inner membrane of the amniotic sac where the fetus develops, breaks. Fibrous bands appear which may be wrapped tightly around the child and can affect circulation in the area.
After undergoing surgery at 26 weeks, the child was born on term at 37 weeks in a perfect state of health.
"The pregnancy was completely uneventful until the third month, when I heard from my doctor from Craiova that there is a problem. Ultrasound showed an amniotic band, a fibrous band could have wrapped tightly around the child’s arm or leg. I was scared the first time, but I immediately began to think of solutions. I did not know what to believe, especially since I found out what was really scary which was that the baby would have been born with deformities. "said Anastasia's mother, cited in the hospital release.

After intervention, the mother and child were closely monitored throughout pregnancy until birth, to monitor the development of the affected extremity.
