President Traian Basescu's younger daughter Elena married Bogdan Ionescu in a civil and church ceremony in the Capital on Saturday.

Basescu, his wife Maria, the bride and the bridegroom were welcomed by a crowd of well-wishers at St Spiridon the New Church shortly after 6 p.m.. There was also a crowd demanding President Basescu's resignation.

Elena Basescu and Bogdan Ionescu had married in a civil ceremony earlier in the day. A crowd of dozens of protesters were present at the civil ceremony too.

The wedding reception was held at Snagov Palace, north of Bucharest, where around 600 guests were awaited to celebrate in a huge tent.

Elena Basescu, a member of the European Parliament since 2009, issued a press release on Thursday offering details of her marriage ceremony. Besides revealing the menu and the names of a few of the guests, the president's younger daughter said the wedding rings are of rose gold, no diamonds and both cost 500 euros; she said her dress is made of Sophie Hallette lace, pure silk organza and taffeta by Romanian designer Anca Maxim; the wedding dress cost around 4,500 euros.
