Marian Vanghelie contributed to the elections campaign for the European elections of Elena Băsescu, daughter of ex-president Traian Băsescu, the arrest decision of the former mayor of district 5 reads.

The information was presented by Alessandra Stoicescu, on the Thursday edition of the show "100 minutes", citing an article published by Libertatea.

"In the spring of 2014, defendant (Marian Vanghelie – editor’s note) asked ( Marin Dumitru, his whistleblower - editor’s note) to collect 10.000 signatures for the candidacy in the European elections of Elena Băsescu, the money needed for this activity were deducted from the commission asked, arguing that this was a fact also known by Apreutesei Viorel, Glăvan Costel and other employees that the amount paid for each signature of the 9.000 collected was of 15 lei/ signature", the decision of the High Court of Cassation and Justice reads.

In a posting on her Facebook page, Elena Băsescu denies the fact that she would be acquainted with Marian Vanghelie and said she did not ask anyone to collect signatures for her in exchange for money.

The High Court of Cassation and Justice decided in March 14, to place into custody mayor Marian Vanghelie and his cousin , Mircea-Sorin Niculae, associate and administrator of several companies. For the other three defendants in the file, respectively the driver of Vanghelie, Adrian Murgoci, the director of Economat district 5, Laura Ciocan,and her husband, Sorin Ciocan, the investigation of the aforementioned was ordered.

The preventive measures taken for mayor Marian Vanghelie and the other four defendants are final and all were contested at the Supreme Court, they are to be heard on March 26th.

The mayor of Bucharest District 5, Marian Vanghelie, is charged with abuse of office, bribery and money laundering, while Mircea Niculae is accused of complicity in bribery and money laundering, and Adrian Murgoci, Laura and Sorin Ciocan accused of aiding the offender and perjury.

Marian Vanghelie shocked over time by his colorful language, but also by his flagrant grammar mistakes.


Marian Vanghelie has been mayor of district 5 since 2000, he won the elections on behalf of the PSD. He was a member of PSD until November 2014, when he was expelled together with Mircea Geoană and Dan Şova, following the PSD National Executive Committee vote.

Subsequently, in March Vanghelie and Geoană announced the establishment of a new political party, the Romanian Social Party
