The President of the Senate, Crin Antonescu, said on Thursday that the plenary session convened to debate and vote the request to suspend President Traian Băsescu would take place on Friday at 5 p.m., having the opinion of the Constitutional Court, as the session of the CC will be held on Friday at 9.00 a.m., Mediafax informs.

“It’s not that we want to constrain or compel the Romanian Constitutional Court in any way. The legislation provides that we ask for a term. The Constitutional Court, that is aware of the law, took note of this and set the meeting tomorrow at 9 a.m. I am convinced that all these procedures will be followed both by us, as you have already noticed, and by the Court, in the most legal and constitutional way. At 5 p.m. tomorrow (Friday), hopefully having the Court’s opinion, we shall provide you the session of debates", said the President of the Senate.

Crin Antonescu also said that President Traian Basescu would participate in the Friday joint session, as he announced on Thursday in the plenum.

Asked whether President Basescu were suspended, the interim should be validated by the Constitutional Court, too, Antonescu responded: "Yes, all the constitutional procedures will be met, without any deviation."

The Liberal-Socialist Union’s request for the suspension of President Basescu was read on Thursday in the Parliament. The President attended the Chambers’ session asserting his point of view. He is to return in the plenary in order to participate at the debates concerning the suspension proposal.
