Băsescu: I apologize to the Romanians for my brother’s arrest. I would have never wanted it. I will complete my term in the office until the last day

President Traian Basescu stated Monday afternoon that he regretted his brother's arrest for influence peddling, but believed that there was no reason to resign as president of Romania, showing that he  would complete his term in the office "until the last day."

"I regret enormously that my brother is suspected of influence peddling, but he's a man of 60 who lives with his family in Constanţa. I live in Bucharest. I had no information about the  business  related to Anghel Sandu. We live each of us with his job, his obligations with his deeds. We do not  see  each other every day, we see  each other every two years",  Basescu said.

Here are the main statements of president  Băsescu:

I have to topics, the first one related to the PM’s request for a representation mandate of Romania in Burxelles, the second one about the requirements related to my resignation from office.

On the mandate for the European Council: PM Victor Ponta asked for a mandate to attend the European Council of  June 26 - 27.  Today, I have announced him that I will not give him a mandate considering the constitutional obligations , the Constitutional Court decision  and the topic. That I am definitely  going to deal with much better due to my experience.

Moreover I’ve had the experience of having sent him to the Council on Energy, where he was unable to support Nabucco

The president does not need a mandate from the Prime Minister. I understand he has complained before the Parliament. (...) What I have practically done was to take a position paper  from the Government, approved by the Premier.

Also, the meeting agenda, is one that due to my long term in the office I’ve had so far, I am well acquainted with, but the internal procedure should have been observed, whereby the Governement sends on all the positions on the topics approached.

I will not keep it from you that there is also a sentimental reason that I want to attend for and refused to give the PM a mandate, a reason related to the fact that The Free Trade Agreement with the Government of the Republic of Moldova is being signed and in the almost 10 years of office I have worked a lot for it. I believe that, besides the Governement of Moldova, I was the second politician to make continuous efforts so that Moldova should get here.

On the Parliament’s statement related to his resignation from office: The request of some gentlemen in the Romanian politics to quit office for a deed I have not committed. I regret enormously that my brother is charged with influence peddling, but he is a man of 60 living with his family in Constanta. I live in  Bucureşti.

I’ve had no information related to the Sandu Anghel business. We live each of us with his work, with his obligations, with his deeds. We do not see each other every day; we see each other every two years.

No intelligence service of the Romanian state has notified me about the relationship Sandu Anghel - Mircea Băsescu
There is no reason for anyone to suspect that the president intervened.

I do apologize to  the Romanians for my brother’s arrest. I would have never wanted it, but it constitutes an evidence in itself  that dissembles the obsessive preoccupation  of the current majority. Namely that the president directs all, he says whom we arrest.

I will not consider the Parliament’s statement. My objective is that until the last day of my term in the office to continue strengthening the justice.

On the criminal prosecution of his son in law, Radu Pricop:  "I do not know what it about, but definitely, all Romanians must be  liable before the law".

The president’s  statements come in the context of a meeting of  the Parliament plenary convened on Wednesday morning, in which  the leaderships of the  Senate and the Chamber of Deputies will require the adoption of a joint declaration asking the president to resign.
