President Traian Băsescu stated that he wanted to make the disclosure about Victor Ponta’s capacity of undercover officer because legal trials will be initiated about the subject, underlying at the same time that the Military Prosecutor’s office should start an investigation on the topic, because there has been a violation of the law, Mediafax reports.

The President rejected Wednesday in a press statement the allegations that he came up wth the undercover officer decoy to strike Victor Ponta so that Elena Udrea should win, qualifying this as a “lie and a concoction”

“Nobody would have forgiven me if Victor Ponta was or would be elected president and over a few years, following a legal trial – and I am convinced that legal actions will be initiated on the topic - SIE would have had to provide officially the information that between 1997-2001 Victor Ponta acted as a SIE officer. What would have happened with him while holding office? Where would Romania be? How would Romania look like?”, the head of state said.

In his view, SIE cannot hide this secret "at the request of the court, because too many laws have been violated, including the Constitution, by the recruitment of Victor Ponta as SIE officer while he was also a prosecutor."

"If such an incident had occurred during the term in the office of Mr. Ponta, let’s say, if he were to win the elections, probably the whole country would have told me that I was in agreement with Mr. Ponta not to disclose this," Basescu accounted for the disclosures made.

The President said that it had nothing to do with the campaign, he pointed out for months before that among the potential presidential candidates a former undercover officer could be found.

Traian Basescu assured that he was not afraid of threats, since he did not violate any laws or the Constitution. "Those who violated the (law) are others because the service (SIE) in my opinion got involved in the press release content. Perhaps an investigation of the Prosecutor will be made, the Military Prosecutor's Office, because in the 1997 the Constitution forbade prosecutors to enroll in other activities that the educational ones, " Basescu said.
