Romanian President Traian Basescu, wants to be a Moldovan citizen to escape the charges of treason and authority abuse or to provide political support to his protégée. These were the main explanations analyzed and discussed Monday on the Daily Summary show on Antena 3.

"Maybe after I’ve finished my mandate I will require citizenship from the Republic of Moldova as a sign of respect for Moldova and as a sign of the love I have for the people in this country. (...) I hope I can get that as the return of a favor because we have also granted it to their citizens, " Traian Basescu said last year while visiting Moldova.

"Maybe he believes this will bring votes from the Republic of Moldova for his favorite (Elena Udrea – editor’s note), he relies on a region he knows well or maybe he thinks that being a Moldovan citizen he can run in the Republic Moldova" journalist Adrian Ursu commented on the Monday’s edition of the Daily Summary show on Antena 3.

"Or maybe he wants to become a deputy in Chisinau , to say that he is protected by the Moldovan parliamentary immunity when his cases ate reopened," Ursu added, referring to the fleet file and the Mihăileanu house affair.

In his turn the chairman of the Political Investigations Group(GIP), Mugur Ciuvică believes that the president’s option is a grotesque gesture.

"It is a grotesque gesture that, after being the president of a country, you should take the citizenship of another country. The gesture itself is abnormal," Mugur Ciuvică said.
