Former president Traian Basescu does not exclude the possibility of illegal financing of his campaign, though he says he would regret that.
"I would be sorry if my campaign was funded with money of dubious sources, but I cannot exclude it. I said for long that we should change the party financing law", Basescu said on Tuesday.
Full funding from the state budget would eliminate the problems of campaign sponsoring, he added.
"I was looking at the 2009 campaign with nine presidential hopefuls representing parties and three independent, so 12 of them overall — it cost 19 million lei according to the Central Electoral Authority. (...) The 2014 campaign, with 10 party candidates and four independents, a total of 14, cost half of that — 9,6 million lei. These figures are absolutely strange, and I also remembered the frequency of posters and meetings in 2009; I saw that in 2014, too, when it was less intense. So we have a problem with parties' financing. Until we do it from the budget, all people who steal money and commit crimes will finance the party; they will contend to finance them", Basescu declared.
