Asked whether he hoped Traian Băsescu would support him in the second round of the presidential elections, Iohannis replied: "Yes, I believe he will support me in the second round, I do not see why not. Now, no matter what they say about Traian Basescu, I do not think anyone can suspect him of being a left wing politician. He is clearly a right wing politician and it seems absolutely natural to me that he should vote for the right wing candidate."
The Liberal leader wanted to argue against the scenario set out by the President that the PDL PNL merger will not be carried out. "What we do is a project for the future of Romania, which is not done for Traian Basescu, nor against Traian Basescu, it is done without Traian Basescu (...) The merger is completed, the political course is completed, three congresses were held that enshrined the merger, the documents were submitted to the Court. Basically, we are now running as the ACL because the merger is not yet registered in the register of parties, but it is irreversible, " Iohannis said.
He added that the merger will be made even if he loses the presidential elections.
President Basescu said Tuesday that he believes that after the presidential elections, regardless whether Iohannis wins or not, a PDL –PMP merger will occur, arguing that Vasile Blaga made a big mistake when he allied with the Liberals instead of making an alliance with the PMP, FC and the Peasants Party.
Băsescu stated on B1 TV, that "Vasile Blaga enjoys feeling close to the PSD, and the Liberals will take them straight that way ".
"Vasile Blaga was close to me as long as I've had great success, I do not think that ... I do not think that Vasile Blaga is not considering the next day, if Iohannis is elected president, or what happens the next day if Iohannis is not elected president. Who do you think would still be interested in what the PDL is doing? They will be embarrassed because they went out and gave up their name and their record ", Basescu said.
