Traian Basescu has urged the PNL and PD to merge since 2005. At the DA Alliance one year government report, the president said that the union of the two parties would suit Romania’s needs.
In the case of a merger by fusion of the two parties, as the PDL leaders want, the National Liberal Party should be dissolved.
Under the law regulating the reorganization of parties after registration in court of the new party, the two parties merged will be deleted from the Register of Political Parties.
The Liberals important leaders, including Mircea Ionescu Quintus, reject this option.
The first alliance between the two parties, the Truth and Justice Alliance resisted for three years, from 2004 to 2007.
