Prime Minister Victor Ponta accused president Traian Basescu of having brutally intervened in justice. Ponta asked the Minister of Justice to notify Basescu’s action to the CSM after the President said that DNA was right to stopped arrests during the elections campaign.
“I believe they did very well that during the campaign, this happens in all civilized countries, they should not make any arrests, because that could influence the campaign”, the president said.
“After attacking the DNA all the time, protecting the corrupt people he keeps in office, the Premier is thus attempting to become a protector of justice, of the DNA. After stating that they will take over the political control of the DNA, now the answers to a journalists, which do not stand for a cessation of DNA’s activity, is being speculated in his own personal style. It is just a new lie belonging to the Ponta brand”, president Traian Băsescu added.
Therefore, Ponta asked the Minister of Justice to notify him before the SCM. "A lie belonging to the Victor Ponta brand", was the reply given by the president just before the visit to Romania of the US vice-president.
“I have seen president Basescu’s statement whereby he claims to have stopped the arrest during the elections campaign, but he will allow arrest afterwards. I believe this is an irresponsible statement, like many others, but I do ask Minister that you notify the Superior Council of Magistracy. If this is not a brutal intervention into the Justice course… First, I believe it is a lie. I do not believe that president Basescu can stop arrest during the campaign, or when there is no campaign. But the mere fact that the head of state can affirms such things related to the elections campaign and the DNA arrests, I believe it has to be sanctioned and please, as representative of the SCM, do notify the Superior Council of Magistracy, let’s sent out a strong message that nor the president, nor any other politician can stop arrests or start arrests. The justice in Romania does not work on the elections campaign criteria but on the criteria of pursuing the truth and observing the law”, the premier said.
