Victor Ponta's case was brought to the Supreme Court yesterday, three months after anti-corruption prosecutors started the criminal investigation. The Prime Minister is charged with complicity in abuse of office resulting in undue benefits, forgery in documents under private signature, continued tax evasion and money laundering. President Klaus Iohannis again called on Victor Ponta to resign, yesterday.

Last June, Klaus Iohannis demanded the Prime Minister's resignation. The president of the National Liberal Party, Alina Gorghiu, also called on the ruling parties to put pressure on Victor Ponta to step down.

Victor Ponta further claims he is innocent and attacked the prosecutor who put together his case. In an attempt to make a career for himself, the latter would have concocted facts that allegedly took place 10 years ago. President Klaus Iohannis cannot ask for Ponta to be suspended from the office. Under the Constitution, the head of state can make such demands only when a Prime Minister is investigated for a crime committed during his term in office.
