Ponta wants to change the elections law: It is an anomaly that the president should get involved in the campaign

Prime Minister Victor Ponta stated Thursday in Arad, that we need to amend the electoral law so that it should state “very clearly" the  categories of high civil servants who are not allowed to get involved in the elections campaign, Agerpres reports.

He commented on the  Constitutional Court resolution to his  referral which  he submitted decrying the actions of  President Traian Basescu  and the fact that he got involved in the  elections campaign, saying that he respected the resolution of the court.

"(...)The Constitutional Court  did not state  that it was constitutional of  Mr. Basescu to be campaigning. The Court said (...) < we cannot supplement the Constitution. If this is provided by law or if the Parliament suspends him, we can rule on that. But, otherwise we cannot >. And then, the solution to this problem is to amend the Electoral Law, to  clearly state the categories of high civil servants  - beginning  with the president, the magistrates, the police, the prefects  - who are not allowed to get involved in the elections campaign ", Victor Ponta specified.

Referring to President Traian Băsescu, the Prime Minister said he thought it was an “anomaly” that a head of state should “wear a T shirt” and be engaged in the elections campaign of a party.

He noted, however, that a future law to limit the right of the President to engage in an elections campaign will not apply to  Traian Băsescu, he said, because he is leaving office.

"Certainly in terms of the President’s involvement in the elections campaign we should develop a law – that will no longer apply to President Basescu, because he is leaving office - but I want us to avoid this anomaly, because it is an anomaly, definitely to see a head of state who walks about wearing T-shirts and giving speeches in the elections campaign.  You cannot imagine that another head of state would do so. And there is the explanation "I know it's immoral, but I am still campaigning ", when this comes from a president of Romania  it is a very serious thing," concluded Ponta.

Ponta's statement comes after the Constitutional Court (CC) rejected on Wednesday the Government’s notification regarding the involvement of  President Traian Basescu in the  elections campaign, submitted  after the president was photographed wearing a PMP shirt, alongside leaders of the party.

President Traian Basescu, wearing a shirt with the words "Vote for PMP" and the logo of this party, appeared in a series of pictures taken at the seaside, alongside the People's Movement Party leader, the images being posted on the Facebook account of Elena Udrea.
