President Klaus Iohannis declared a new National Holiday
On February 28, the Chamber of Deputies decided that Good Friday, the last Friday before Easter, will beome a National Holiday, and workers will ge the day off.
The proposal was initiated by a group of 42 senators and deputies from the whole political spectrum, and was adopted by the Senate as the first seized chamber. The proposal passed, with 233 votes for, 7 against and 19 neutrals.
The reason behind this decision was stated as it follows: “Good Friday in Europe is a legal holiday in 16 countries out of the 28 countries in the European Union. In Romania, the Code of Labour has 14 days of legal holidays, less than other European countries such as Begium, Lithuania or Cyprus, which have about 16-17 days of holiday (...) Romania should also adopt Good Friday as a legal holiday, as it is one of the most important religious events of the year”
According to the new code of labor, the national holidays which workers get off work are: January 1st and 2nd, January 24, Good Friday, First and Second day of Easter, May 1st, June 1st, First and Second day of Whitsun, August 15, November 30, December 1 st, December 25 and 26.
