Senate President spoke about the scandal involving Mircea Basescu, the President's brother, and explained why the fundamental institution of the Romanian state will ask Traian Basescu to resign.
"I believe the growing magnitude of this scandal takes me to a state of perplexity in certain moments," Tăriceanu said.
"I cannot believe that something like this could happen, especially considering that Traian Basescu wanted to transform himself into the Apostle of the fight against corruption. (...) We can notice towards the end of his term in office that corruption is actually conducted by him and apparently he is the one trying to cover up everything that happens", he added.
According to Tăriceanu, the effects on the domestic plan are going to be felt, while the effect on the external plan are already felt.
Referring to the Declaration about Băsescu’s resignation, the president of the Senate argues that MPs “ should make abstraction of the person of Traian Băsescu”.
“This matter should be looked at objectively, meaning the consequences of this scandal need to be analyzed (…). The vote has to express the Parliament’s concern towards such intolerable actions ”, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu said .
"Traian Basescu will not step down, even if the Parliament asks him to. This Declaration will be a very important signal to all European leaders and I believe, I do believe, that the pressure on him will be enormous and at some point he will be forced to resign", he insisted.
