Traian Băsescu: Romania has got an action plan, in case of an attack

President Traian Basescu explained in a press statement on Sunday evening a few things about Romania’s presence at the NATO summit last week.

Here are the main statements by the president:

-“I am repeating the words with which I began the conference in Newport: The summit confirmed the Alliance’s strength and solidarity but also a very strong messages that security, freedom and prosperity are not for free. They cost money. Effectives armies prepared to defend democracies”.

-I would like us to understand where we were and where we are after the summit. We all have the map of Europe in the picture, especially the Eastern flank of the Alliance. Across the Eastern flank there were Poland and the Baltic States with a contingency plan. The Southern part of the Eastern flank, represented by Turkey, also had a contingency plan. Romania and Bulgaria had no such plans because they were considered countries outside risk attacks. The change is that Romania has also got, after the summit, a plan of action if attacked. Attack from the sea, land, air. The plan comes and gives solutions, countermeasures to defend Romania, with its own forces. That is the difference regarding Romania before and after the summit. Romania is now a country that will be defended in any scenario if attacked.

-In the shortest time, NATO structures and national forces should make available forces to defend Romania in any attack scenario that might harm the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country.

- NATO does not have a budget in Brussels which it distributes to the countries. The countries bringing their contribution to protection by NATO naval forces, air forces and ground forces, will take money out of their pockets for Romania’s security. Just as the costs we incurred in Afghanistan, with our troops, with the costs we bore. The United States of America bore its costs too, Germany, Spain and Italy bore their costs. When we refer to the Alliance, all the states contributing to Romania’s security are contributing with money from their own pockets.
