The PMP President Traian Basescu said on Tuesday that his party protested against the Ciolos Government because they failed to observe the government program, which initially provided for the election of mayors in two rounds stating that PNL and PSD are thus proving their demagoguery by endorsing the current electoral framework, Mediafax reports.
"The People's Movement protests against the non-compliance by the Ciolos Government with the commitment they undertook in the government program. This program stipulated the election of mayors in two rounds," said Traian Basescu President of the People’s Movement.

Traian Basescu said that the parties who claim they are renewed, PNL and PSD, do nothing but demonstrate that their statements are demagogic and added that the current electoral system does nothing better than to fix or give the best chance to Mayors in office, either belong to the PSD or to the PNL .
"Thus, they demonstrate that they foster no reservations on the current mayors, whether in the second, third, fourth or fifth term, even if some of them have been in office since before the 1989 December revolution ", Basescu said.

Prime Minister Cioloş motivated waiving the change in the electoral law by the fact that after the consultations they had with the parliamentary parties, they concluded that there was no support for it.
A bill promoted by PNL on the return of the election of mayors in two rounds is being debated by the specialized committees of the Senate.
On the other hand, the law on the election of mayors in a single round was initiated by PDL and promulgated by President Traian Basescu in June 2011. At that time, USL claimed that they did not endorse the bill, even if part of the leaders said that changing the electoral legislation would favor also the USL.

Local elections were held in June 2012 under the law promulgated by the then President Traian Basescu, so that candidates for mayors who obtained the highest number of votes were declared winners in the first round.

Electoral Code Commission which amended the legislation in 2015 kept the same formula of the law with a single round for mayor’s election. Like in 2012, voices from the civil society have challenged the enactment arguing that such a vote method is questioning the legitimacy of elected mayors, favoring those in office and it gives little chance to independent candidates.
