Former transport minister Miron Mitrea was sentenced to a two-year prison term without suspension, in a definitive sentence of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ, Romania's Supreme Court), Agerpres reports.

Five judges of ICCJ maintained a previous sentence of the case court; they also increased a sum to be confiscated from Mitrea from 169,000 lei to 327,000 lei.

The Supreme Court upheld the five-month jail sentences of two other defendants, Irina Jianu and Nicolae Popescu.

The sentence is final, and Mitrea was to be incarcerated immediately.

The Court retained the accusation of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) against Mitrea; he has accepted unlawful benefits amounting to 927,420 lei from Jianu in 2001-2002, to maintain her in the positions of deputy chief inspector and chief inspector of the State Inspectorate for Constructions.

The DNA has proved this was the value of construction and decoration works at a house owned by Mitrea's mother, carried out free of charge and without contracts or subcontracts by several companies of Bacau County (southeastern Romania).
