The Social Liberal Union won in 2012 almost 90% of the seats of county council president positions. PSD obtained over 50% of them receiving 22 seats of the 41 possible.
Only one PSD candidate was defeated in Arad. PNL ranked second with nearly 30% of the seats. PDL had one seat more than the PC or UNPR scored, who obtained one seat each.
Compared to the 2008 elections, the PDL suffered a stinging defeat. The Liberal Democrats lost 12 of the 14 posts of county council presidents.
Instead, the Liberals benefited from the alliance with the PSD. In the 2008 elections, the Liberal Party won only five seats of county council president, and in 2012, under the umbrella of USL they jumped to 13! UDMR lost half of the seats, the number decreased from four to two. The Democratic Union of Hungarians was surpassed by the former government partners from the PNL, in Mures and Satu Mare. Instead, there occurred two firsts: the Conservative Party won in Maramures and the UNPR won in Neamt.
In the mayoral elections, PDL - Basescu's party at the time, did not score well. They only won 10 cities. Most voters relied on USL, PSD won 18 mayors of cities and PNL 9.
Hungarians too lost a municipality. The Mayor of Satu Mare gave in the seat to social democrat Dorel Coica. The Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania kept one municipality, Klaus Iohannis was elected for another term as mayor of Sibiu.
After two years USL no longer exists. And the Liberals have constituted a new local majority with the PDL.
