UDMR challenged the rejection by the European Commission of the citizens' initiative to protect national minorities, but MFA supported the European Commission’s view and positioned itself against UDMR.
UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor had a discussion with Prime Minister Victor Ponta, asking him to withdraw the intervention the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had submitted. According to sources in the coalition, the Prime Minister spoke to Titus Corlăţean who said that a drawback would be equivalent to his resignation. In these circumstances, UDMR threatened to exit from government, but a decision should be made next week.
The tension in the coalition was confirmed for Gandul publication by UDMR leader, Deputy PM Kelemen Hunor, who said that the topic of Romania’s intervention in the Luxembourg process had not been subject to any consultations inside the Coalition. "It was a partisan action of MFA! I asked for the intervention to be withdrawn", the UDMR leader said.
Asked if the Union considered leaving from government, given that it will not be withdrawn, Kelemen admitted indirectly that this was a very likely option. "I do not want to answer that question, but my position is very determined and the Premier knows it, I expect an answer from him. For me it is a matter of honor! " Kelemen Hunor said.
