Dacian Ciolos is the newly assigned Romanian prime minister, according to the announcement made by President Klaus Iohannis. He will try to form a new government list and then obtain the investiture vote in Parliament.
Dacian Cioloș was born on July 27, 1969 in Zalau. He graduated from the Faculty of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj, Ciolos is an engineer horticulturist. He continued his postgraduate studies in France, a country where he followed several internships.
After his MA graduation, he worked as an agro economist trainee at the European Commission in Brussels, in the Division of Rural Development , Directorate-General of Agriculture (March to July 1997, April 1999), dealing with the preparation of the SAPARD Program - developing the regulatory framework and the administrative implementation in eligible states.
Between 2002-2003, he worked at the European Commission, the EC Delegation of Romania, as Manager with Target Agriculture and Rural Development, SAPARD. Since January 2005, he was employed in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development, first to the post of adviser to the Minister, representing him in the Special Committee on Agriculture at the European Council (January 2005 - May 2007), then as Undersecretary of State for European Affairs (January 2005 - October 2007) , then as an undersecretary of state for European Affairs (May to October 2007) AND afterwards he became minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in the period 11 October 2007 - 22 December 2008 in the cabinet led by Emil Boc.
In 2010 he was appointed European Commissioner from Romania for Agriculture and Rural Development, a position he lost with the change of the European Commission.
Since July, Ciolos is special advisor to President Jean-Claude Juncker on food safety issues.
On October 15, Ciolos received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Veterinary Medicine University in Cluj.
Dacian Cioloş is married and speaks French and English.
