President Traian Basescu said Tuesday that Romania was entitled to compensation from the EU for the abandonment of the Nabucco project by having resources allotted for the modernization of railways, national roads and regional infrastructure projects managed by the European Commission.

‘Currently, Romanian feels entitled to be compensated for the abandonment of the Nabucco project. Take into account that Romania, in its support of the European project, did not position itself halfway between South Stream and Nabucco, it just said Nabucco’, Basescu sated quoted by Mediafax.

President added that this project was undertaken by our country because it met the EU objective of diversification of gas supply.

He believed that South Stream "is only a consolidation of Gazprom hegemony ", noting that he did not mind that this pipeline be built, but it did not comply to the European objective.

During the meeting at the Cotroceni Palace, Basescu urged Romanian Ambassadors in EU capitals to explain and support the compensation plea for Romania, because it was the only state that did not hesitate between choices for Nabucco and South Stream, as did its neighbors.

The President referred to the "Connecting Europe" program managed by the European Commission which allocates funds for the modernization of railways, roads and infrastructure for the Internet connection

Traian Basescu also said that all official statements to date say that Nabucco was not abandoned and that a branch of the TAP pipeline will route through Nabucco, but he did not believe this could happen in 10 years time.
