Be EU. Worrying statistics: 30 percent of EU women are victims of domestic violence. 25% were sexually abused
Domestic violence is one of the plagues of the world we are living in. The European statistics are trully worrying. Sabina Iosub discussed the issue at „Be EU” with EU officials and they explained how to try tackling this problem.
„This is the most important security issue in the EU. 30 percent of EU women suffered violence against them, and more than a quarter were sexually abused”, spanish MEP Jordi Sebastia said.
The uniform application of a program is impossible, due to cultural differences between member states.
„In some countries it is still tabu. This year most of us reached a consensus to try to improve methods to fight this phenomenon”, explains Marc Tarabella, Belgian MEP.
In Romania there are many programs that try to reduce the phenomenon. „These things happen especially in places where the population is less educated or where due to economic reasons people are willing to accept. Consideration should be given to all aspects that contribute to domestic violence. We drafted a pact in this regard and we formed a committee to implement”, MEP Viorica Dancila stressed.
