President Klaus Iohannis signed Tuesday a decree on the promulgation of the law that persons without citizenship or foreigners who have contributed to the promotion of Romanian culture, civilization and spirituality and those who contribute to the promotion of Romania through sports performances can benefit of Romanian citizenship on request.
The law approving the Government Emergency Ordinance no. 37/2015 amending and supplementing the law on Romanian citizenship provides that "Romanian citizenship may be granted, upon request to a person without citizenship or to a foreigner who has contributed in particular to the protection and promotion of Romanian culture, civilization and spirituality and who is assuming membership in the Romanian cultural space, possibly with domicile in the country or abroad, "Agerpres reports.
The law also stipulates that the Romanian citizenship can be granted, on request, to a person without citizenship or a foreigner who can contribute significantly to promoting Romania's image by outstanding performances in sports, with the possibility of establishing residence in the country or keeping it abroad if the following conditions are met : the applicant will represent Romania in the national teams, in compliance with statutory regulations of international sports federation to which our country is affiliated and the applicant expresses his commitment to Romania and to the Romanian society specific system of values.
"People who were Romanian citizens, but have lost the Romanian citizenship for reasons beyond their fault or who have had citizenship taken away without their consent , as well as their descendants to the third degree, can, upon request, recover or may be granted Romanian citizenship, with the possibility of keeping the foreign citizenship and establishing the domicile in Romania or maintaining it abroad", the law also provides.
