President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday after meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron, that they discussed about deepening strategic partnership with Britain on various levels; the president considered that the size of the military and security bilateral cooperation played a major role, especially in the current security framework.
The head of state was "pleased" that after 16 years, the British Prime Minister came to our country, while the British Prime Minister argued that the discussion with President Iohannis was "very useful" and expressed hope that they would not take another 16 years before another British prime minister would visit Romania.
According to President Klaus Iohannis, the two talked about securing the Eastern flank of NATO, about the Romanian community in Britain, the renegotiation of relations between the EU and the UK.

"It is the first official visit of a British Prime Minister to Romania for the past 16 years. Britain is one of our key partners for a strategic partnership that binds us. We have decided to deepen the partnership on different levels, "said President Klaus Iohannis, after meeting with the British Prime Minister.
"The military and security dimension plays a major role, especially in the current context, between Romania and the UK. It is in the interest of the two countries to strengthen this cooperation at all levels, "the President said.

The topic of the Romanians living in UK was also debated. "We discussed the Romanians living in the UK and who pay taxes there. Most of them there are very well integrated and contribute to the UK economy through the taxes they pay, "the president emphasized.




"We have also exchanged views on migratory flows which continue to be a complex problem. I reiterated Romania’s stance, we argue that the roots of the problem shout be sought "added Klaus Iohannis.
The Head of State said he had also discussed with the British Prime Minister about ways to increase economic cooperation between Romania and the UK. "Trade last year recorded the highest level in the bilateral history and signals for the current year are very positive," he also said.
Last but not least, the President thanked the Prime Minister of Great Britain for helping out with the collective tragedy by taking the wounded to be treated in hospitals in the UK.
In his turn, the British Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday at the Cotroceni Palace, that he discussed with President Iohannis about the way in which Britain and Romania can strengthen defense cooperation, migration and the EU reform.

"Relations between UK and Romania are important and we talked today about the cooperation between our countries. We talked about reforming the European Union, Britain wants to remain in a reformed European Union, "said the British Prime Minister.

On the refugees issue, David Cameron added that "we discussed stopping the phenomenon of immigrants trafficking."
Earlier, Prime Minister Cameron met with his Romanian counterpart Dacian Ciolos. British Prime Minister's official visit to Romania takes place shortly before the winter European Council to be held in Brussels on 17-18 December which will debate the issue of migrants.

Last week, the British Prime Minister paid a visit to Bulgaria. .
