UPDATE- Mircea Băsescu was sentenced to serve four years in prison in the case file in which he stood trial for influence pedaling.

The ex-president ‘s brother was accused of having received 250.000 euro from the family of Bercea Mondial to intervene with the judges in order for them to rule a favorable sentence in the case file in which he was tried for attempted murder.

Marian Capățână,the one who brokered the receipt of the bribe, was sentenced to serve three years in jail for accessory to influence pedaling.

They will reduce from the punishments of the two, the time which they have already spent in preventive arrest and in home arrest. Mircea Băsescu and Marian Căpățână have been in custody and then in home arrest since July 19 2014 until June 24, 2015.

The ruling of the magistrates in Constanţa court is not final.

The Constanţa Magistrates Court today are pending ruling in the case file in which Mircea Basescu is on trial for influence peddling and Marian Căpăţână for complicity to influence peddling.
The brother of the former president is accused of having received 250,000 euros from the family of Bercea's Mondialu to intervene with judges for a favorable solution in the case file in which Sandu Anghel was tried for attempted murder.

Prosecutors requested seven years in jail for the brother of former president Traian Băsescu.

The scandal between Basescu's brother and the family of Bercea Mondial had a first denouement in 2015 . On 29 October 2015 Bercea Mondial’s son was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison for extortion.
It is the maximum penalty given in this case file, in which Bercea’s relatives are accused of having blackmailed the former president’s brother, Mircea Băsescu. Izaura Anghel and her husband were sentenced to 4 years and six months in prison




On December 11, however, prosecutors asked for the brother of former President a punishment of 7 years imprisonment and the confiscation of the 250,000 euros, which Mircea Basescu allegedly received from the family of Bercea Mondial.

Marian Capățână, who brokered the bribe taking, told the judge that Traian Basescu taught his brother to make a complaint for extortion.
The scandal started in 2014 after Antena 3 was the first to present a series of audio-video recordings which showed that Mircea Basescu allegedly received 250,000 euros to intervene as and help Bercea Mondialul be released from prison.
The footage shows that president of Romania at the time, Traian Basescu would have known about that approach and that he had been the one who actually had to solve the problem.



Forced by the family of Sandu Anghel, Mircea Băsescu compliant with the DNA that he was being extorted and tried to lure the criminal into a trap.
