President Klaus Iohannis is asking the Parliament not to amend the Criminal Code regarding conflicts of interests. Iohannis warns that he will not promulgate such a change, he will send it back for review or challenge it before the Constitutional Court.
Here is the message issued by the Presidential Administration:
"I have been following attentively and equally concerned the legislative process of the Romanian Parliament on its intention to amend the criminal code provisions on conflict of interest matters.
I cannot agree with the amendment of Art. 301 of the Penal Code, which seeks to decriminalize the conflict of interest, to allow freedom of employment of family members in the parliamentary offices.
Nobody is allowed to favor own family members in the exercise of public offices and representations.
I am pointing out that, in the event of adoption by Parliament of these changes, it will be returned to Parliament or I will challenge it before the Constitutional Court, under my constitutional duties. "
