Teachers might face up to three years in prison if they demand money for the so-called school fund. This will happen only if a new legislative initiative just tabled in Parliament is eventually passed by the Romanian MPs. Under this new draft law, collecting money for the school fund will be punishable by six months to two years in prison, and the sentence could be as harsh as three years behind bars if the money is demanded by School Board members. The MP who came up with this initiative claims that nobody has the right to demand money from parents as long as the Constitution clearly stipulates that education is free-of-charge in this country.
