Romania's women's epee team won gold on Thursday in the fencing competition at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, after defeating defending champion China, 44-38.

Ana-Maria Popescu (ex-Branza), Simona Gherman, Simona Pop and Loredana Dinu thus got Romania's first medal at Rio 2016, a crowning achievement of this generation of fencers.

This is Romania's fourth Olympic fencing medal that adds to Mihai Covaliu's Sydney 2000 medal in men's sabre individual, Laura Badea's Atlanta 1996 medal in women's foil individual and Ionel Dramba's Ciudad de Mexico 1968 medal in men's foil individual. It is also Romania's first Olympic fencing gold in team's competitions.

In the final against China, Popescu started off on the right foot and won an advantage for Romania in the duel with Sun Yujie (1-0). Pop preserved the advantage in her own duel with Xu Anqi (5-4), while Gherman increased the advantage while fighting Sun Yiwen (9-6). Sun Yujie managed to reduce the gap when fighting (10-9), but Popescu restored it after defeating Hao Jialu (14-9). Gherman brought the score to 21-14 as she beat Xu, while alternate Dinu maximised the advantage to 24-16 as she defeated Hao. Yujie got China close by five touches (25-30) after playing Gherman, but the 2008 Olympic silver medallist Popescu finished the meet magnificently against Xu, 44-38.

Cheering on the Romanian team from the bleachers were other athletes of the Romanian Olympic team, including the women's handball team.

The bronze medals in the team epee event went to Russia (Tatiana Logunova, Violetta Kolobova, Lyubov Shutova, Olga Kochneva), which defeated Estonia (Irina Embrich, Julia Beljajeva, Erika Kirpu, Kristina Kuusk), 37-31 in the third-place meet.
