Almost 40% of the Romanian population has never connected to the Internet, the highest percentage in the European Union, where the average dropped from 43% in 2006 to 18% this year, according to Eurostat. Denmark has the lowest rate of non-use of the Internet, only 3%, followed by Luxembourg (4%), the Netherlands (5%) and Finland, Sweden and the UK (each with a 6% rate of non-use), a statement of  the EU's statistical office shows.

At the opposite pole, 39% of Romanian have never  used the Internet, compared with a 37% rate of non-use in Bulgaria and 33% in Greece.

In 2006, the rate of non-use of the Internet in Romania was about 74%, according to Eurostat, which notes that the figure may be inaccurate because of an interruption in the data series that led to the study.

At EU level, 65% of people aged between 16 and 74 years used the Internet daily in 2014 compared  to 31% in 2006.

The daily utilization this year ranged from 32% in Romania, the lowest average in the EU, to  85% and 87% in Luxembourg and Denmark.
