German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday in Berlin after the meeting she had with Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, that Romania had made efforts in terms of border protection and fighting corruption, but she awaits the report of the European Commission (EC) on the Schengen accession.

Asked at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos whether Romania was ready to join Schengen, Angela Merkel said that the Schengen project was very timely and it was "right" that Bucharest made efforts regarding borders security, but she said she would wait for the next European Commission report on corruption.

"I think that Schengen is very appreciated by the citizen and an instrument for economic growth. It is correct that Romania has made many efforts to defend borders, but we wait for the next EC report on corruption. We are waiting to see that in this report we find all Romania’s efforts to combat corruption so as to join Schengen, " Merkel said, according to Agerpres.
The German Chancellor said that there are good reasons to maintain freedom of movement within the Schengen area, and for this, the issue of migration must be solved. She added that the current temporary imposed controls at borders are part of the Schengen Agreement.

In his turn, Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said that Romania has made great progress to combat corruption and this is visible and the current government will continue making efforts so that this progress be reflected in the report of the European Commission.
"We hope that this will lead in the upcoming period to Romania's accession into Schengen," Ciolos said.
