Moldovan Prime Minister, Iurie Leancă, has stated today during the meeting with the Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta that the Republic of Moldova has set itself the goal to become a fully fledged member of the European Union by 2019, when Romania holds the EU presidency. Prime Minister Victor Ponta has assured his Romanian counterpart that Romania supported this goal without any reserves nor any “hidden thoughts.”  “It is the expression of the fact that  first of all the European Commission, but also the Member States have assessed the way we have accomplished our commitments that were set forth in the actions plan, they have reached the conclusion that we have accomplished these commitments  and at the same time it is a  sign of trust in the political will, in our capacities and the actions we have undertaken, we from Kishinev  in achieving some  European integration goals which means nothing other than the modernization of the institutions in the Republic of Moldova ”, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca stated.

“Every time we have had the opportunity to discuss with the  heads of government in the European Union, every time, beyond  the discussions related to Romania, we have also talked about Moldova  and I have pointed out that it is important to  help them keep on  this European route, to support the pro European coalition”,  Prime Minister Victor Ponta added.

The Prime Ministers of Romania and the Republic of Moldova have also talked about  how the  accelerating situation in Ukraine  has determined the advancement  of deadlines.

Asked about whether Romania represents the most important support Moldova has had thought this period, Victor Ponta replied with a “yes, definitely”.

“I have always deemed it a painful sacrifice, a shame to us, to the Romanians, when we knew that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, about whom we say  that they are our brothers, could not come on a visit, or travel to Iasi, unless they had a visa(...). I have considered it a historical injustice (...) Romania, both from traditional reasons as well as  pragmatic concerns will always be  the main attorney of the Republic of Moldova in the European Union”, the Romanian Prime Minister added.

The two prime ministers called the partnership between Romania and  the Republic of Moldova as a "special" one, thus bringing into question the projects to  be developed between the two countries, namely  the gas pipeline that will pass across Romania and Moldova, and the bridges to  be built.

The year 2014 is a year of political changes both for Romania and for the Republic of Moldova, and the situation over the Prut is a tensed one. Although at the current moment, the Government is a pro-European one, by the end of the year many changes can occur. The two Prime Ministers have answered the questions about a possible  situation change generated by a future communist government oriented towards a communist power, close to the Russian Federation.

Another danger that the Republic of Moldova faces in its  way to joining the European Union is the case of Transnistria, because any country that wants to be  an EU member must meet certain conditions, and military and territorial vulnerabilities must be removed.
