President Klaus Iohannis discussed Monday with the Foreign Minister of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier about Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, the German official stressing the need to find a solution that would allow progress in achieving this goal.

According to a press release from the Presidential Administration, in the discussions between Iohannis and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the Cotroceni Palace, the state and prospects of the Romanian-German relations were reviewed , both sides emphasized the observed dynamics in recent years of the bilateral visits at the highest level, as a proof of the privileged character of the Romanian-German relations

The Romanian President revealed that Germany continues to be the most important trading partner of our country and pledged to attract new investors, highlighting the successes of large German companies in Romania, the statement reads.

Also during the meeting, topical issues on the European agenda were addressed, particularly the situation in the Eastern neighborhood countries.

"President Klaus Iohannis reiterated his support for Moldova's European course. The German Minister said that Berlin attaches equal importance to keeping the pro-European orientation of this state. The two officials also discussed the worrying developments in Ukraine and the situation in West Balkan countries ", the presidential administration conveyed.

Another issue on the agenda was Romania's accession to the Schengen area. "The German official said that a solution must be found to enable progress in achieving this goal," stated the press release.

In the afternoon, the President of Romania will be in Sibiu, where Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier will receive the title of honorary citizen of the town.
Klaus Iohannis and the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany will then participate in the celebration events of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, which celebrates 25 years of existence, and the exhibition called "German minority in Romania - past and present united Europe" from at the Brukenthal Museum.
