President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday night, after the European Council meeting that Romania understands the increased danger of the armed conflict in our neighborhood and is involved in the resolution thereof, stating that we cannot delude ourselves that "everything was settled" by the Minsk Agreement, MEDIAFAX reports.

Iohannis said that the first European Council which he had the honor to attend as President was held in an extremely complicated geopolitical context.
"We welcome the decision of the two leaders, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande, who were close to the Ukrainian President Poroshenko in a negotiation that was not easy, they undertook a difficult task," the president said.

He mentioned that he repeated his conviction that the only solution for the Ukrainian political crisis is the one based on dialogue and cessation of bloodshed.
Iohannis mentioned that the majority of items convened Thursday were included in the Minsk memorandum, in September.
He said, referring to the meeting with Petro Poroshenko, that it was a meeting that was both necessary and desired and announced that he had received an invitation to go to Kiev soon and the next week he will welcome the Foreign Minister of Ukraine.

The Minsk negotiations, meant to defuse the situation in Ukraine, ended Thursday with a ceasefire agreement which will enter into force on the night from Saturday to Sunday.
