The British people do not foster racist feelings towards Romanians and Bulgarians, but believe the government is responsible for the lack of real information about the impact that immigration will continue to have on the UK , Mediafax reports.

77% of respondents said that immigrants from Romania and Bulgaria would be welcomed in their country if they worked hard and played taxes, would learn the language and integrate into the community.

However, 80% of respondents said they would like tougher measures to be taken regarding immigration.

The survey conducted shows that 38% of Britons believe that the number of immigrants from Romania and Bulgaria will reach 50,000 in 2014, while 18% think the number will be between 50,000 and 100,000. 13% believe that the number of Romanians and Bulgarians to arrive in the UK could be up to 500,000.

The Romanian Government has also given assurances that their number will not be so great. Leading politicians in Romania and Bulgaria have rejected fears that the lifting of restrictions could lead to a wave of immigrants from the two countries to the UK.

Nearly three-quarters of Britons believe that the British government did not provide enough information about what would happen when labor market restrictions in the UK are lifted on 1 January 2014 for Romanians and Bulgarian.s

The British government has repeatedly refused requests to publish estimates of the number of migrants who are expected to arrive in the UK from January 1, 2014, although unofficial forecasts indicate the arrival of more than 50,000 Romanians and Bulgarians per year.

The survey was conducted after Prime Minister Cameron had set radical plans to overhaul social aid rules, including the prohibition for newcomers to receive social benefits in the first three months since their arrival in the UK.
