Devastating information for the Romanian who was sentenced to death in Malaysia. Ionut Alexandru Gologan’s appeal, convicted of drug trafficking, was rejected, MFA informs in a release. The Romanian’s lawyer introduced urgently an appeal to a higher court, the Federal Court of Justice. Currently, a decision is pending from the judicial authorities in Malaysia on the term set for the trial , the Foreign Ministry said.
Since the arrest of the Romanian citizen, the Romanian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has made "multiple approaches on diplomatic and consular channels with the purpose to grant specialized assistance for the defendant, particularly to identify optimal ways of defense in order to avoid the death penalty." In this regard, there were contacts between the Foreign Ministers of Romania and Malaysia.

To prevent such cases, MFA has already started in 2013, an awareness campaign of the Romanian citizen about the risks posed by drugs transportation in countries whose legal systems provide the death penalty for such crimes.
Under the slogan "Drugs changes your destination" the anti-drug campaign aims to inform the general public about the lesser known aspects of legislation in countries such as Malaysia, MFA says.

Ionut Alexandru Gologan, the Romanian sentenced to death in Malaysia lived in commune Telega (Prahova). Last time he was in his hometown was in the summer of 2012, a month before being arrested. Later, the young man went to Germany, where he was recruited by drug traffickers, Mediafax reports.
The Romanian comes from a divided family, being raised by his grandmother after his mother left Telega several years ago.

The young man who worked as a part-time driver had in his luggage 494 grams of methamphetamine which was discovered on June 26, 2012,on the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
