President Traian Băsescu is making a press statement
The main statements made by president Traian Băsescu:
‘The situation in Ukraine is not currently a direct and immediate threat to Romania’s safety, to Romania’s independence or the sovereignty of the Romanian state. In the meantime, Romania warns that the apparition of a new frozen conflict, after Osetia, Transnistria and Abhazia is likely to accentuate the tensions giving rise including to armed conflicts’.
‘Romania considers its own security is subject to a medium and long term risk’.
‘Romania calls on the Russian Federation to stop any military intervention in Ukraine and to go back within the limits of the framework agreements of Kiev and Harkov, signed in 1997 and 2010.’
‘Romania calls on the new Ukrainian authorities whom it acknowledges as legitimate, to observe the minorities rights. ’
‘Romanian believes that president Ianukovici, through his actions, has lost his legitimacy and must announce his resignation, in order to ease Ukraine’s transition.’
‘Beyond what the international community will decide we believe, strongly , that currently, beyond declarations, Ukraine needs an immediate agreement with the IMF, the World Bank, and if necessary even with the EU, in order to have the necessary resources ensured so as not to default on payments, to pay the military, the police and the civil servants. This is what we believe needs to be done now. ’
I think it is a very good initiative that related to a Parliament position taking on the matter. It may have its position too which I hope will be consistent with mine.
I assure you that I do want to talk about the government, but I do not want to hide a subject as important as that of Ukraine. I think it is not the time to mix topics. From my point of view, I’ll do whatever lies within my responsibility for a constitutional installation of the Government and to facilitate full compliance with all the provisions of the Constitution.
