Prime Minister Victor Ponta has stepped down from his position of president of the Social Democratic Party through a surprise announcement, posted on Facebook on Sunday evening.
Ponta says he gives up all his leadership positions within the party until he has thwarted the charges brought against him by the National Anticorruption Department.
Prosecutors have levelled accusations of money laundering, tax evasion and conflicts of interest against the head of the Cabinet in Bucharest.
