Romania should have had 3,000 km of highways, but currently it only has 530 kilometers. In 1967 the first projects have been drafted regarding a network of highways with a total length of almost 3,200 kilometers.

The projects aimed at constructing sections of roads that would connect East to West, and North to South.

Also, the highways projects map included a highway that would have crossed the south of the country from Vama Veche to Constanta, Bucharest, Craiova, Drobeta Turnu Severin and Timişoara.

After the Revolution, the highway construction rhythm slowed increasingly.

Now our country has got only 530 kilometers of highways, of which nearly 400 were built with great efforts after the Revolution.
