Merkel declared her defense of the jobs in Germany and argued that generalized minimum wage (which does not exist in Germany) was the reason "many countries in Europe have a much higher unemployment rate than in Germany, wages not being in relation with their performance ".
With an unemployment rate of 6.9% in March, Germany is currently experiencing an unemployment rate close to its lowest level since the reunification of the two German countries in 1990.
Merkel firmly opposes to a "generalized minimum wage imposed by policies," referring to a bill to this effect, adopted in early March by the left wing opposition, according to the German newspaper Bild Zeitung.
Germany does not have a minimum wage standard applicable to all employees, but the social partners are able to agree upon it , region by region and sector by sector.
To prevent any mishaps in some professions and jobs , Merkel's conservatives want to introduce a binding minimum wage in the sectors where there is none.
