Prime Minister  Victor Ponta  said Thursday   referring to the amendments made to the Penal Code, that he did not believe that a European Embassy would  contest the Parliament’s right  of  lawmaking because  "the same thing happens in their country", adding that the only reaction that was completely wrong was  that of the US Embassy addressing investments.

"I have seen the statements, in principle I believe that no European  embassy  would contest the Parliament’s right of lawmaking, because the same things happens in their country.  The only reaction which I believe was totally wrong, because it did not address  the reality, was that of the US Embassy speaking about American investments. As far as I know, Chevron  is investing in Romania,  or  it can  leave if the law is not applied and we are unable to demonstrate  that we can protect private property.  Nobody from Chevron has ever told me anything about the MPs.  They have asked me every time if a private property can be protected. I believe that’s where the mistake occurred (related to the embassy – editor’s note) and I will convey that", Ponta added.

The Prime Minister’s statements were broadcast Tuesday  during the On Today’s Agenda show, on Antenna 3.

The amendments to the Penal Code are dramatic, trashing down a 10 years work   of the anticorruption institutions, president  Traian Băsescu said .

Moreover, the head of state warned that Romania had no more chances  of entering the Schengen area, as a consequence of the Amendments made to the Penal Code, estimating that the CVM report will be a very poor one related to the Parliament’s activity.

After  Traian Băsescu,  PNL leader , Crin Antonescu, calls for the re-debate of the amendments to the Penal Code in the Chamber of Deputies.

Even the European Socialists are criticising the amendments to the  Romanian Penal Code .Swoboda: The amendment  is against the EU values . It is a step back
